VARIOUS PICS FROM CELL PHONE CAMERA WITH ‘VIGNETTE’ APP:
These images were all taken with the HTC EVO 4G with the Vignette camera app. It makes the camera phone more fun to use… I was just experimenting and thought I’d share…

Twenty minutes after taking a picture of Crevice Kitty, I am at the last light before arriving at work… This is one of the oversaturated filters…
Mariann this morning sleeping with Crevice Kitty tucked right into her legs… Crevice Kitty is otherwise known as Ella and she loves getting into warm crevices…

A SHORT PIECE I POSTED TO THE SGT GRIT NEWSLETTER ABOUT MY DAD IN THE KOREAN WAR (ER,,, CONFLICT):
Mounted On A Tripod
Sgt Grit,
I subscribe to a weekly email from Military.com which includes links to interesting videos. One recent link was to a video called “One Mile Kill Shot” taken from History Channel. In it, the Marine Corps sniper uses a .50 cal single shot rifle to take out insurgents during an operation in Iraq
I forwarded this to my dad, retired Marine Colonel Barkley “BB” Yarborough (Enlisted as E1 1943, Retired as O6 1988). He enjoyed watching it and replied as follows:
Reminds me that in 1951 we used the older .50 cal machine gun, sandbagged with a scope sight, for a sniper weapon. It worked long range too!”
Well, that intrigued me and I asked him to elaborate a little and this is what he wrote:
“The gun was mounted on a tripod, with scope sight on top. Placed on ground and moved to get the sight set on the target spot. The target spot was one which had been observed with binoculars as a place where enemy soldiers were seen frequently. The sight could be changed every few days to pick a more likely traffic spot.
Once the sight was set on the spot, the tripod was anchored with sand bags to it would not move. Then a gunner would stand watch on the gun, and a second Marine would use binoculars and tell the gunner when a person had entered, or was about to enter the target spot. When the gunner had a target in the sight, he would squeeze off one round. Gotcha!
Our gun was set at the ridge line just over the left shoulder of the XO in this photo, taken in front of Charlie Co. CP. I have attached the image my dad referred to above. I hope the readers enjoy the story.

AMAZING IMAGES FROM 1909-1912 RUSSIA PRE WWI AND REVOLUTION:
With images from southern and central Russia in the news lately due to extensive wildfires, I thought it would be interesting to look back in time with this extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time – when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun. Collected here are a few of the hundreds of color images made available by the Library of Congress, which purchased the original glass plates back in 1948.

YARBZ POOL UP AND RUNNING JUST IN TIME FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEKEND!
We worked hard to get the area cleaned up yesterday. I took a vacation day as did Mariann and we spent the hours from 0700 to 1730 putting in back in order. The flower boxes at the back side of the pool will be filled this evening and the bushes still need some trimming but we’re ready for swimming. The weather has been so good for the pool this year I hope it continues. When we pour the concrete, the decking will come out. We may not get to the concrete untill 2011. We’ve got to pay off the liner first… Cheers and stop by if you’re in the area.
