Too bad…too young. I’ll always remember DJ from the 1897 Game 5 playoff against the Pistons when he was on the receiving end of pass from Larry Bird in the final seconds. Bird’s steal of the inbound pass was mazing, but DJ’s lay up was no gimme. He was off balance, sideways, and if memory serves, had to used his left hand.
In the words of the immortal Johnny Most:
“Now there’s a steal by Bird! Underneath to DJ! He lays it up and in!! … What a play by Bird! Bird stole the inbounding pass, layed it up to DJ, and DJ layed it up and in, and Boston has a one-point lead with one second left! OH, MY, THIS PLACE IS GOING CRAZY!!!”

He was an amazing player. Bird said he was the best he ever played with…
