Super Bowl Week, Day 3

CATAGORIES: SPORTS — FloridaBill @ 10:38 am

I still cannot believe that the Bears are in the Super Bowl. Even though every TV news program has on-site reports from all over Miami (this morning, Randy Salerno from Channel 2 was near some gator pond making jokes about ginormous frogs in the swamps and the Miami weather), I still can’t believe it.

Last night, I went to Sports Authority and purchased paraphenalia for the family. I paid $188 for jerseys, a hat and a tee shirt. I went with the Urlacher jersey ($80!!) just in case Devon Hester loses the game for us. Mrs. FB went with the white jersey and got Grossman’s name on the back. I am fairly certain that the #54 jersey is the most expensive piece of clothing I have ever purchased for myself short of a jacket or a suit.

Here is the requisite Manning story from the BBC and here is a little article about the comic book heroes that make up the Bears team.

The next four days will pass very slowly me thinks.

I have a patient who owns a comic book shop/sports paraphenalia place, and when the red sox won the world series and when UCONN won the NCAA he said he made up his entire salary for the year in three weeks offa people like FB.

I am so gullible. Just like the millions of other fans around who are getting properly attired for the Big Game, not to mention Bears attire on Friday day at the offices around Northern Illinois. You are just jealous that the Patriots are not there (again) this year…will anyone in New England even stay up late enough to see the outcome of the game?

  3. Feste Says:

I would be skiing even if the patriots were in the big game. Not a football fan whatsoever, really.

I’ll follow the RedSox all summer, but I won;t watch many games.

This summer is Americas Cup yacht racing, which I will be totally obsessed with. I will likely have to upgrade my cable TV account in order to watch it.

Where is that this year? I have a friend who went to the Americas Cup when it was in New Zealand a couple of years ago. Coincidentally, my parents are vacationing in Australia at the moment, then off to New Zealand and Fiji after that. I am WAY jealous. (NOTE: If they happen to read this, they need to call me about repairing the Tucson house…)

Got any snow in Vermont to ski on yet? I guess you can ski on pine straw, but it isn’t nearly as fun. While up at the Vermont hideway, since you don’t care about the outcome, just think good thoughts about bears in general and all will be well.

Sports Authority was pretty near cleaned out of jerseys and t-shirts and the selection of hats was downright miserable. They, and other sellers, are making bank for sure.

Regarding the Americas Cup: oddly I have not decieded on a team to support….. I do not care for the defending team (Alinghi of Switzerland… nice… landlocked nation with the Americas Cup)

The “American” team is BMWOracle, and since I HATE larry elison of Oracle and his dickhead management of the team, I refuse to support them. The new Team New Zealand is a favorite and have teamed up with the Unite Arab Emirates national airlines for financial support. There are two teams from Italy I could cheer on as underdogs. My favorite skipper, Paul Cayard, is not racing this cycle so far as I can tell.

  6. FloridaBill Says:

But where will it be held?

New Zealand the UAE make a formidable team if you like desert sheep sailing your boat.

  7. Feste Says:

Since the swiss team is landlocked, they must sail outside their country to “defend” the cup….they claim that their “home yacht club” is on the adriatic sea, but they do not want to defend in Italy since there are 3 teams, one which is very formidable. They have since chose to “defend” in Valencia, Spain because it is beautiful and likely a lot less expensive than other mediterranean locales. And generally the spanish team sucks in americas cup competition.

If NZ/emirates win, the assumption would be that thye sail out of Aukland, but wouldn’t it be a gas if they defended in Dubai.

  8. FloridaBill Says:

Dubai would be lovely. They could race around that artificial island that is shaped like a palm tree. Or is that somewhere else? I may have to cheer for the Swiss to repeat. Any landlocked team that wins that competition is pretty tough.

They got good oranges in Valencia I hear…maybe the BlogLord will have a summer place there by then and we could all go watch the races.
