I hear the Thunder Three Miles away…..
He was too young.
I never liked his music that much but he was all over the radio when I was a teenager. He died very young and I felt another link gone… RIP dude.
I was a HUGE fan, but not of his mainstream sappy chick music. He actually had a ton of great stuff back in the day; Joe Walsh on guitar, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell, Emmy Lou Harris, and Graham Nash on vocals, a bunch of the best studio players of the day…. he really was a stellar musician and songwriter.
Interestingly, as a guitar player, he most often tuned into non standard tunings, much like Joni Mitchell. Many songs are very hard to figure out without knowing how he tuned. That may not mean very much to non guitar players, but it is very similar to what Stephan Stills did with CSNY.
He went the Zappa way, though FZ only made it to age 53.
