Strange Names of Places

CATAGORIES: GENERAL NONSENSE — ZappaCrappa @ 2:19 pm

I was just reading through my old home town on-line newspaper and was reminded of a place near where I grew up. The name of the place is Knob Lick, KY. I have lived and travelled to QUITE a few places and I have to say that my home state of Kentucky probably has some of the most unusual and politically incorrect names of anywhere I have ever seen. To name just a few:

Knob Lick
Flat Lick
Big Bone Lick State Park (KY seems to have a licking fetish)
Stinking Creek
Nigger Creek (I shit you not…it was 2 miles from my house!)

I have been to ALL these places. What are some of the more interestingly named places you all have been to?

Connecticut is rather boring in that regard. The only interesting place name I can think of is Sodom ( a section of Canaan.. very biblical). There is a town called “Bozrah” which actually derives in a biblical manner from Basra.

  2. Geekess says:

My family once lived in Cut & Shoot Texas.

  3. CinLin says:

Got a town here in Alabama called “Boaz”.
Then there’s “Opp”, they hold a rattle snake rodeo every year. Should not forget “Eutaw”, pronounced “Utah”

How about “Bong Recreation Area” in Wisconsin? I was just in Knob Lick, KY recently when we travelled from Mammoth Cave to Lake Cumberland. My GPS unit took us on some hilly and dangerous roadways that I would have never traversed but for the fact that I input “shortest route” versus “fastest”.

PS: It is about to storm like a MoFo here…

I once ate at a Chinese restaurant called Hung Fat. Does that count?

    Not really…but it’s still funny : )

I remember Bong Recreation Area FB. I remember while serving with Recruiting Headquarters in Milwaukee, the “Bong Family” gave an award every year to a military person serving at the Armed Forces Recruiting Headquarters and it was called “The Bong Award!” I always wanted to get the Bong Award just because of the name…but alas it wasn’t meant to be.

In honor of your years of service in the Marine Corp and your stellar performance as a stay at home dad and bass fisher extraordinaire, we will award you our own little “bong award” as an honorarium. Perhaps the BlogLord could photochop something appropriate? In any event, by the power vested in me by the blogosphere and based on the infinite power of my own free will and nearly limitless ego, I hereby award the first ever “Jugger Bong Award” to Zappa Crappa who deserves it more than anyone. You may now hit the bong.

If anyone else wants to know about Bong Rec Area (named after Richard J. Bong who was an ace fighter pilot in WWII and invented the single hit water pipe; (not really)), here is a link: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/bong/

There is a place in Alabama called Eastaboga (I often wondered if there was a Taboga or a Westtaboga) and there used to be a restaurant called Bugtussle up near Smith Lake, not to mention the Buttahatchee River in Alabama or Pee Pee, Ohio (I think that might be an Indian name). California had a place called Happy Camp and another place called Weed (maybe they were the same place at one time?). There is a website (www.funnynames.com/) that has lists of the names of funny places AND people’s names too.
